Seachange

During the long weekend for the Cambodian Queen’s Birthday Maud and I finally got a chance to get out of Phnom Penh and make a long overdue pilgrimage to the beach at Kampong Som (Sihanoukville).

The bus ride was relatively painless, and even made its half-way-stop where I could buy my favorite Cambodian snack – deep fried sweet bananas with sesame seeds!

Roadside Bananas... yummy!

We stayed at Serenity Guesthouse, on a point overlooking the ocean and Ochheuteal Beach. For $12 a night we had a huge room with a lovely balcony overlooking the ocean. We could sleep with the windows open and listen to the waves, something which always invokes very soothing memories of childhood summers spent in Burleigh Heads for me.

Neither Maud nor I realized that Kampong Som was already seeing the start of the rain season, so we spent the next two days wandering down the beach dodging rain showers. Some would have complained about the weather, but for us it was such a pleasant change; to be cool and in a breeze.

We spent the evenings eating BBQ seafood and drinking cocktails on the waters edge. I managed to catch the Australia v Brazil match on the TV in one of the beachfront shacks. That was a memorable way to watch the world cup: sitting on a beach in Cambodia, coconut drink, waves crashing on the sand…. Funny world!

Sand Angkor Watt... very cute!
